In contemplating our government's current legislations, their intricate and cumbersome nature makes them far from straightforward. The intentional complexity of legal language appears designed to necessitate legal counsel for the average citizen to navigate a courtroom effectively. This intentional intricacy stands in stark contrast to Thomas Paine's critique of absolute governments, which, despite being a disgrace to human nature, have the advantage of simplicity.
In our present situation, the extensive and intricate nature of government legislation mirrors Paine's criticisms of England's constitution, leading to confusion and a lack of clarity regarding causes and cures. As Paine noted, "Absolute governments, (though the disgrace of human nature) have this advantage with them, they are simple." In contrast, the constitution of England is so exceedingly complex that the nation may suffer without being able to pinpoint the source of the problem. This complexity results in diverse opinions on causes and cures, reminiscent of every political physician prescribing a different medicine.”
While I acknowledge that government reforms don't always necessitate complete abolition, it's apparent that our current regime, marred by corruption and tyranny, protects wrongdoers at the expense of the innocent's right to liberty. Therefore, the abolition of such a regime is not only just but a duty for those who claim to be patriots of a free country. It's time to critically assess and reform a system that should serve the people, not confound them in complexity.
